OER - Funding: Get Funding

BNY Mellon Through a grant from BNY Mellon, full-time and adjunct faculty can apply for funding to review and incorporate OERs into their classrooms. Contractual teaching and project limits will apply.

CCAC seeks grant proposals:

  • to encourage the adoption, adaptation, and/or creation of openly licensed resources to support our students’ learning
  • as a solution to the rising costs of textbooks
  • as a way to provide faculty with access to high quality open learning resources that meet the changing needs of their students, classrooms and teaching methods.

Grantee Expectations:

Review

Reviewers should become knowledgeable about Creative Commons and copyright through the OER Guide

Selected ZCT/OER textbook must be relevant to current CCAC curriculum and students, be of a relevant size and scope, and be shared openly through a Creative Commons open license

Reviews should be written in the context of the discipline and addressed to an audience of scholarly/teaching peers

Reviews should highlight both pros and cons of the selected ZCT/OER textbook and give a balanced view of its utility

Reviews should be no fewer than 500 words and no more than 1000 words in length

Reviews will be shared openly through a Creative Commons open license and added to the OERs by Discipline collection

Recruit / Share

Both adopters should be knowledgeable about Creative Commons and copyright through the OER Guide https://libguides.ccac.edu/OER

The shared ZCT/OER will be uploaded to discipline’s OER Guide page

Both adopters teach using the ZCT/OER for at least two semesters

Both adopters complete a self and student assessment at the end of the semester when the ZCT/OER is used

Adopt

Adopting ZCT/OER is defined as reducing student costs by $50 or more (per student) by choosing existing open educational resources such as textbooks, online videos, online learning modules published under open licenses, or replacing a textbook or other required course materials. The CCAC Library is collecting a list of Open Textbook repositories and OERs By Discipline.

Adopters are making few changes to the resources. It is expected that adopters will possibly need to revise their course layout, assignments, and/or create ancillary materials. However, there is a growing body of ancillary materials available for existing open textbooks. Those who adopt a vetted OER from another CCAC faculty member will be paid only for adoption. Those who adopt an OER in a course which has not had an OER before at CCAC will be paid for both the review and the adoption ($500).

Adopting existing open educational resources – ($250-$500)

Adapt

Remix existing ZCT/OER and/or create new open content to bridge gaps in available resources. Examples of this would include editing existing chapters, adding new materials from other sources, removing extraneous sections, merging several openly licensed resources, or creating supplemental content for existing sources such as quiz question banks, lecture slides, or lab manuals. Applicants will estimate total working hours expected for the project. The final product of this work will be open source and the adapting faculty member will follow the laws governing Creative Commons or open source materials.

Adapting existing open educational resources, customized to CCAC’s instructional needs – ($500-$4000)

Create

Creating ZCT/OER is defined as creating at least 75% of the course content as new and original course material and, if applicable, create supplemental materials such as test banks, PowerPoint presentations, videos, images, lectures, lab manuals, and other supplemental materials. Applicants will estimate total working hours expected for the project. The final product of this work will be open source and the creating faculty member will follow the laws governing Creative Commons or open source materials.

Creating an open access textbook that is designed specifically for the course that you teach ($2500-$5000)

Maintain

Maintaining an existing CCAC ZCT/OER that requires revision for currency or relevance; can only be applied to an individual ZCT/OER once per year. ($250-$500)
