Creating a Culture of Consent: Teaching Children About Consent

Teaching Children About Consent

Teaching children about consent is more about teaching them to respect boundaries--theirs and others--than it is about sex.  These articles and videos can help explain ways to teach children about consent and how to talk to them about it.

As with any media you are sharing with children, it is recommended that parents preview these videos before sharing them with their children.

Explanation of Consent, using the analogy of tea. by Blue Set Studios (This is the clean version.)

Consent can be withdrawn at any time, and yes yesterday, doesn’t mean yes today. Some still need to learn or be reminded about what consent is.

Consent for Kids by Blue Seat Studios

Consent is like being ruler of your own country...population: YOU. This is a smart, playful guide to consent and bodily autonomy. There is an upcoming book, based on this video that’s packed with bright and energetic illustrations. Readers will learn about boundaries and how to set them; signs of healthy (and unhealthy) relationships; ways to respect themselves and others; how to spot grooming behaviors; what to do if someone makes them feel uncomfortable or unsafe; and much more. Along the way, they’ll be encouraged to reflect on (and improve!) their own behavior and to practice consent in their daily lives. Whether you’re looking for a consent primer to share with a friend or searching for a way to talk to your child about what it means to be in control of their own body and respect others’, look no further! This humorous and insightful book from the co-creator of the viral “Tea Consent” video is the perfect teaching tool, conversation starter, and insightful, empowering resource for educators, kids, and families everywhere. To be released: Jan 7, 2020!

Teaching Consent to Kids by Fatherly

No parent wants their child to grow up to be a victim or a perpetrator, which means teaching about consent early is crucial. Lauren Vinopal, Fatherly’s Science Reporter, shows us that teaching consent to your kid is actually pretty simple. Though some parents may dismiss early discussions about bodies and sex as reactionary or inappropriate, the truth is consent is not just about sex. It’s about boundaries. Something that’s crucial for every child to learn. Nurturing this understanding of boundaries in your child at a young age will help to develop their empathy and self-worth. However, as they grow older, many adults often only mention STDs and pregnancy when discussing sex with children. Therefore it’s important to explicitly connect consent with sex, empowering them to form healthy adult relationships.
